Full Itinerary Summary

Long-form version of Greece 2026 with logistics, hotel notes, costs, confirmations, and transfer details

Greece 2026
Athens, Meteora, Zagori & Delphi
8 days

This page is the cleaner full-brief version of the trip, including the extra details that were trimmed out of the day cards on the main itinerary.

It keeps the road-trip strategy, hotel notes, airport transfer logic, and the booking or confirmation details you asked to preserve.

Day 1 - Easter Monday Arrival
Mon, Apr 13Athens
Day 1

The vibe

Relaxed arrival, easy food, and one beautiful viewpoint instead of a packed sightseeing day.

Land at 12:00 PM, head into central Athens, check into Rooster Suites, then keep the day flexible because Easter Monday can mean closures and crowds. The best first-afternoon move is street food around Monastiraki followed by Philopappos Hill for a gentle green walk and one of the best eye-level Acropolis views in the city.

Arrival plan

  • Land at Athens Airport at 12:00 PM and aim for a simple transfer into the city rather than stacking extra stops.
  • Grab souvlaki or gyros after check-in and use Philopappos Hill as the main first-day outing.
  • Philopappos Hill is the best low-effort win here: about a 20-minute walk, not too crowded, and a great early view of the Acropolis.

Airport to Rooster Suites

  • Metro Line 3 is the best balance of price and ease. Ride toward central Athens, get off at Monastiraki or Syntagma, then walk about 5 to 8 minutes. Typical total time: 45 to 60 minutes. Fare: EUR 9 one-way.
  • X95 Airport Express Bus is the budget option, especially late at night. Ride to Syntagma Square, then walk about 6 to 10 minutes. Typical total time: 60 to 75 minutes. Fare: EUR 5.50 one-way.
  • Taxi or Uber Taxi is the easiest with luggage. Official flat fare to central Athens is EUR 40 from 05:00 to 24:00 and EUR 55 from 00:00 to 05:00. Typical travel time: 35 to 50 minutes.
  • Best pick: Metro for a normal daytime arrival, X95 if you want the cheapest option, taxi if you want the simplest door-to-door arrival.

Day 2 - The Easy Drive to Meteora
Tue, Apr 14Athens -> Kastraki
Day 2

The vibe

Smooth highway driving with one monastery stop that is high-reward and low-effort.

Pick up the rental car from a downtown location like Syngrou Avenue so you do not have to backtrack to the airport. The drive to Meteora is about four hours on the modern E75. On arrival, go straight to Agios Stefanos, which is the most accessible monastery stop and ideal for the first Meteora afternoon.

Drive notes

  • Use a downtown car pickup to keep the route clean and easy.
  • The E75 is the easiest major driving leg in the trip and should feel straightforward.

Why Agios Stefanos first

  • Aim to arrive around 3:00 PM and go directly to the Monastery of Agios Stefanos.
  • This is the no-stairs monastery: you walk across a small bridge from the parking lot.
  • It is run by nuns, beautifully maintained, and gives sweeping valley views without draining you on the first road-trip day.
  • Tuesday is perfect because it is closed on Mondays.

  • Alternative options considered: Heaven & Earth $240 and Meteoritis $180.
  • Kastraki is the right base for easy Meteora access.
Day 3 - The Grand Monastery & The Mountain Drive
Wed, Apr 15Kastraki -> Aristi
Day 3

The vibe

Big morning monument, then a careful but manageable shift into the Zagori region.

Drive to Great Meteoron right at 9:00 AM since it is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesday is your window. After lunch, head west toward Zagori via the fast A2. The key here is not just the destination but the driving strategy: avoid the most stressful roads and do not arrive after dark.

Morning monastery plan

  • Great Meteoron is the headline monastery stop and the most physically demanding one.
  • Expect roughly 300 stairs carved into the rock and plan to take your time.

Driving warning

  • Do not stay in Papigo if you want to avoid the most aggressive hairpin switchbacks.
  • The Papigo road has 14 intense turns and is the wrong kind of memorable if you are tired late in the day.
  • The road up toward Monodendri is still winding, but it is wider and much less intimidating.
  • Make sure this transfer happens before 7:00 PM so you are not doing mountain driving in the dark.

Day 4 - Vikos Hike Lite & The Strategic Southward Drive
Thu, Apr 16Aristi / Monodendri -> Galaxidi
Day 4

The vibe

Huge gorge views, short easy walks, and a smart repositioning drive that saves tomorrow.

This is a scenic punchy day built around viewpoints rather than a true full hike. Start in Monodendri, see the cliffside monastery, push on to Oxya for the biggest gorge panorama, then work back through the stone bridges before driving south to Galaxidi for a much easier Delphi morning.

Morning and midday stops

  • 9:30 AM: Walk the flat stone path from Monodendri to the Monastery of Agia Paraskevi, which sits dramatically on the cliff edge above the gorge.
  • 11:00 AM: Drive through the Stone Forest and continue to the Oxya Viewpoint. The final walk is short and flat, and the payoff is one of the most vertigo-inducing views in Zagori.
  • 1:00 PM: Picnic at Kokkori Bridge with time on the river rocks below the arch.
  • 2:30 PM: Quick stop at the three-arched Plakidas Bridge before committing to the drive south at 4:00 PM.

Why Galaxidi tonight

  • The 3.5-hour drive sounds long, but it saves tomorrow completely.
  • Galaxidi gives you a calm seaside evening and sets up a far easier Delphi visit the next morning.
  • This is the strategic day in the itinerary: more driving today for less stress tomorrow.

Day 5 - Delphi & Return to Athens
Fri, Apr 17Galaxidi -> Delphi -> Athens
Day 5

The vibe

A much easier archaeology day because the long drive was handled the day before.

From Galaxidi you are only about 1 to 1.5 hours from Delphi, which is exactly why the previous day's southbound drive matters. Spend around three hours on the ruins and museum, then head back to Athens Airport, return the rental car, and switch back into final-city-days mode.

Delphi timing

  • Take the scenic coastal road to Delphi in the morning.
  • Plan on about three hours total for the archaeological site and museum.

Athens reset

  • Drive about 2.5 hours back to Athens Airport after Delphi.
  • Drop the rental car there and ride the Metro back into the city for the final three nights.
  • Using a central Athens base again keeps the weekend fully walkable.

Lodging

Check Point - Plaka

Athens

  • This is the final three-night base for Apr 17 through Apr 20.
  • Staying in Plaka or nearby Psyrri is ideal for the free Athens days and the early-tour morning.
Day 6 - Athens Uncapped
Sat, Apr 18Athens
Day 6

The vibe

Wide-open city day with museum time, shopping, and food built around how you feel.

Keep Saturday intentionally loose. This is the best place in the trip to improvise: museum if you want depth, Monastiraki if you want energy, or a longer lunch if you want to slow the pace down after the road-trip portion.

Suggested day shape

  • National Archaeological Museum for the main structured stop.
  • Monastiraki for browsing, shopping, and general central-Athens wandering.
  • Vegan Beat or Avocado for a planned meal anchor if you want something specific.

Lodging

Check Point - Plaka

Day 7 - Acropolis Tour & Anafiotika
Sun, Apr 19Athens
Day 7

The vibe

Classic Athens morning followed by a softer, more atmospheric afternoon.

The early 7:45 AM Acropolis walking tour is the fixed centerpiece. After that, the best follow-up is not another major site but Anafiotika, where you can wander the island-like whitewashed lanes tucked under the Acropolis.

Best use of the day

  • Start with the 7:45 AM Acropolis walking tour while the area is still comparatively calmer.
  • Spend the afternoon in Anafiotika rather than trying to force another heavy monument day.
  • Keep the evening relaxed because the airport transfer is very early tomorrow.

Day 8 - The 7:00 AM Departure
Mon, Apr 20Athens -> ATH
Day 8

The vibe

Simple pre-dawn execution without sacrificing the final evening.

Do not move to an airport hotel for the last night. Stay in Athens, keep Sunday evening intact, and pre-book a 4:15 AM taxi. At that hour there is essentially no traffic, so the airport run is straightforward and far less disruptive than changing hotels.

Departure logistics

  • For a 7:00 AM flight, you want to be at the airport by 5:00 AM.
  • Pre-book a taxi through something like Welcome Pickups or FreeNow for 4:15 AM.
  • Expected travel time from central Athens is about 35 to 50 minutes, and it should be closer to the low end before dawn.

Taxi vs X95

  • Taxi is usually best before dawn. Official flat fare is EUR 55 between 00:00 and 05:00 and EUR 40 between 05:00 and 24:00.
  • The X95 Airport Express Bus runs 24/7 and is the best non-taxi option. Fare is about EUR 5.50 and trip time is usually about 60 minutes, but give yourself extra buffer.
  • Practical rule: flight before about 8:30 AM means taxi. Flight around 8:30 to 9:30 AM and you want cheaper means X95.

Lodging

Stay at Check Point - Plaka on the final night

Athens

  • Do not move to an airport hotel Sunday night.
  • Keeping the central Athens hotel preserves the final evening and avoids another pack and unpack cycle.
